Celebrating the Obama Administration

Valerie Jarrett, former senior advisor to President Barack Obama, and the administration’s four LGBT liaisons will receive NCTE’s Ally Award tomorrow.

The National Center for Transgender Equality presents our annual Ally Award to a person or group of people who are not transgender and have done a significant amount of work to advance transgender rights. This year, we are proud to honor the Obama administration with this award.

Five people will receive the award on behalf of the whole administration — Valerie Jarrett, former senior advisor to the President, and the administration’s four LGBT liaisons: Brian Bond, Gautam Raghavan, Aditi Hardikar, and Raffi Freedman-Gurspan (who currently serves as NCTE’s Director of External Relations).

President Barack Obama oversaw the most trans-friendly presidential administration in history. By NCTE’s count, we won over 150 federal policy victories, large and small, during President Obama’s time in office.

In a time when so many of these victories have been rolled back or are under threat, it is important to remember the work that went into achieving them and the people who worked together to ensure this progress. In doing so, we can gather strength to continue fighting back and eventually rebuild.
