Avoid .dev Domains for Local Testing

I usually develop on my office network, using live domains, sub-domains of *.mycompanydev.com.

I have recently switched to a laptop and am now in need of using local domain names for testing.

I just found out the hard way that you cannot use *.dev domains in Google Chrome, otherwise it will redirect you to the HTTPS version of the site.

There is good reason for this, .dev is a real TLD. There are real sites on it. Setting up a local development site could override a real site.

For now, I am using myproject.local and may switch to myproject.localhost
