Basically, Android app permissions are used to offer access to potentially sensitive data beyond the app. They can be able to improve the functionality of your application by allowing access to the internet, device location, camera, and etc. By using Android app permissions efficiently, users obtain control, transparency, and data minimization.

In fact, permissions were much simpler before Marshmallow (API 23) release. All permissions were managed at install-time. This means when a user went to install an app from the Play Store, the user has been faced a list of permissions that the app needed. The user could either accept all the permissions and continue to install the app or decide not to install the Android app. In short, it was an all or nothing approach for using permissions in Android development. There was no effective method to grant just only specific permissions to the app, and there was no way for the user to revoke certain permissions after installing the Android app as well. In addition, The user had no way to change permissions, even after installing the application. This made it easy for Android developers to tackle permissions; however, it was not a proper approach for user experience. As a result, Marshmallow represented considerable changes to the permissions approach. It introduced the new concept: runtime permissions. These are permissions that are requested while the app is running. So, these type of permissions can be allowed or denied by the user. In Android permissions, it has been mentioned by Google that the goal is to give users more transparency to their own personal information that is being used by applications.
