Doctors Know How to Prevent Cancer

It benefits their pocketbooks to treat it instead

This was the premise my colleague shared at the company cafeteria during lunch.

I was appalled. My father was a practicing physician. I took it personally. Both of my grandmothers had cancer. Why would my own father withhold the cure?

I wrote my colleague off as a whack job.

Ten years later, I started immersing myself in understanding nutrition. I was a mother and realized the value of eating what was beneficial. I brought four healthy children into the world and I wanted them to thrive. What did I know about raising kids? They came without instructions.

I pureed whole foods and froze them as cubes in ice trays, so I could pop out homemade baby food. If we traveled, I knew my babies would eat a banana and an avocado, which I could mash.

We rarely gave our children sweets. In fact, when my oldest started in preschool, he came home one day and asked, “Have you ever had a cupcake?” They had celebrated a birthday and he had had his first.

Mind you, my spouse was definitely more lenient. He introduced my oldest to McDonalds and when they got home, my child had a bout of diarrhea, but he admitted he enjoyed the food, despite the outcome.

When my oldest started first grade he developed strep. The pediatrician put him on antibiotics, and it cleared up. A few weeks later, we returned. This cycle continued and we talked about removing his tonsils and…
