The Journey of the Modern Day CISO

The hero we need, but REALLY don’t deserve.

The role of the CISO began as purely security focused. 20 years ago, CISOs often reported to a workforce IT group and focused on high level security initiatives for the company. This often included rather medial tasks such as securing employee computers and security training for staff. The CISO’s more technical tasks often came with securing their data centers, which was in high fashion in the early 2000s. Most CISOs did indeed come from humble beginnings: usually entering an organization as an IT Admin, and working their way up.

However, starting in the early 2000s, enterprise security went through 3 major changes. These changes would come to reshape the role and power the CISO:

In 2006, Amazon’s Web Services division began offering IT infrastructure services to enterprises. These services were quickly adopted for its efficient use of compute resources, cost effectiveness, and virtually unlimited scalability. These services would then kick off an entire industry focused in providing “Cloud Computing” services. With the entrance of several other big names in tech (Microsoft, Google, Oracle, etc.), the Cloud industry flourished into the $266 billion industry it is today.
