A photo taken during my Colorado trip — I call it “Happy Koi,” a peaceful fish in a peaceful environment.

This is written based off of personal experience and the observance of others’ situations. This is not about me, however, I can relate. More so, it’s about the people around me, my tendency to care for others, and my interest in personal development, psychology, and the power of influence amongst one another. In regards to the title of this blog, it’s a direct correlation to my passion for visual imagery, creating, and the coincidental focus of both of my ventures. (Salt Creative House and Observe)

Let’s begin.

“We all figure it out.” Some of us sooner than later, and many of us unfortunately never do. The idea that we all grow up “learning to work” and then it shifts to us “working to live”. What I’m getting at is work is our livelihood, so finding the right job is imperative to one’s own happiness. Everyone who is apart of society must face the decision to choose a career path which requires a time commitment to learn your practice. Through intuition, most people have an idea of what they are capable of pursuing, yet everyone still happens to second guess their career choice. We all ask ourselves… “Am I wasting my time with this job?” or “What if I pursued another career instead…”

If you've asked yourself these questions, most likely you’ve reached early-adulthood / adulthood or you’re coming up on it. If that’s not the case, then either someone’s influenced you early on, you’re an outlier, or you don’t know what I’m talking about. Regardless, we all have or will wrap our heads around our own purpose of existing which is a concept known as “existentialism.”

By the nature of things, we are all dealt a hand at birth which contains a randomization of personality traits. This is then accompanied with environmental impacts shaping your human behavior into the person you are. You know what you know, you know what you can do, and you know who you are, so why isn’t it super easy to choose a career and pursue it.

“Do you know what’s out there?” I believe that’s one of the big factors that makes it so hard to choose especially with today’s millennial mindset. The idea of “options” and “possibilities” from which individuals could see themselves doing… until they actually do it and realize it’s nowhere near what they expected. The vast variety of jobs ranging from, jobs we hear everyday to even very meticulous and fitting to one’s unique personality type of jobs. Unfortunately, once again, it takes a large time commitment to find out a job isn’t suitable for oneself.

Entering college, I realized choosing a “destiny” was a shared problem from consistent interaction with my peers and the reaffirmation that this was the situation for most students. Either they were running straight into unknown territory or they were already thinking about switching majors to “test” if another field could suit their interest better. Studies show “20 to 50 percent of students enter college as “undecided” and an estimated 75 percent of students change their major at least once before graduation. When students switch majors, it lengthens their expected 4-year graduation, stretching it an additional year or two causing an additional $10,000/semester in student loans, crippling the student post-graduation. Also, due to career indecision, it’s costing the government in federal student aid, 100 billion dollars.

I have my own solution. Stay tuned to hear more about it and thank you for reading my first blog. The next article will shed light on what Observe and Salt Creative House are as well as my mission with them.

Thank you,

Lawrence Chen
