Why I chose to go to MATC and begin my career

First off I would like to talk a little about myself. I am currently a Home depot employee, a father of a 2 year old, a husband, and a current IT computer support specialist program student. This is a little bit of a stressful time. The reason being is trying to juggle my school work, my family, and my job is not the easiest task with only 24 hours in a day. Being that I am only 23 years old, I have my life ahead of me. The best of my experience and life goals are yet to come.

Choosing a school close to home was actually pretty easy. Even though there are universities around me and other technical schools, Milwaukee Area technical College was a very obvious choice for me. This was because of my personal experience and the experience of some of my close friends. I myself started out at the University of Milwaukee but things just didn’t feel right in such big classrooms and lecture halls, it was hard for me learn and pay attention like in the smaller classrooms at MATC. Also I have had friends who both attended UWM and MATC and the ones who went to MATC seemed to be having a better learning and engaging college experience than at UWM. I myself took off a couple years from college, then my son was born. Him being born made me feel like I had an obligation to do better for myself and my family. This made me go sign up to go to MATC. The reason behind me picking the IT Computer Support Specialist program seemed like an easier choice than I thought it would be. This program deals with computers and other forms of technology. Although the IT program has so many options I chose this one because of the fact I am more interested in helping people face to face, more interactions, and figuring out all the hardware and software problems I can. Starting at MATC is really the beginning of my IT career experience. I have always tinkered with and messed around with computers, cell phones and other electronics, I have never held a work position with the need to really use any of these on a day to day basis.

So far my experience switching from a university to a technical college such as MATC has been pretty good. MATC has instructors basically at your disposal. Instead of having a room full of 40 plus students there are only roughly 20, which is a better opportunity for the instructors to do more one on one teaching if needed. All of my instructors have been very understanding and helpful when the time came. I am glad to say I chose to go here because they have given me a lot of hands of experience learning, instead of teaching the concept of what everything is, we actually do it. The day I receive my Associates Degree will be a day I feel accomplished after all my hard work and time I put into earning it.
