Original Films Should Be In The Spotlight

Ever wondered why so many storied franchises remained successful? Nostalgia. Nostalgia is a powerful thing as it drives many movie goers to see a new movie in a franchise that they adore because they have great memories from seeing the other installments. Because consumers keep spending money on these movies, the studios take notice and realize that they should probably keep shoving out new installments for their franchises. When the movie theater showtimes are full of movies that are adaptions, sequels, prequels, etc, it seems that original films are lost among these.

Original movies tend to have better success critically when compared to reboots and such. Original ideas are met with praise as they are unique and something that hasn’t been done before. Some people don’t like that and just like something that is safe and familiar, while others appreciate innovative ideas. A few of those innovative ideas could be groundbreaking or they could be complete flops, when doing an original film there comes that risk. Either way, original movies are still important in the industry and a lot of attention should be given to them.

With that said I’ve comprised six reasons why original movies should be shown in the spotlight:

Making an original film gives the opportunity to create even more movies for them. I know I said that it seems like there’s too many franchises already, but the point is that original movies need to be in the spotlight, original ideas and concepts should be shown and appreciated which is why making a successful movie franchise out of it would solidify it and make people remember it.

Adaptions or sequels, prequels, etc. tend to flop in the critics eye. Several of the greatest movies ever are original screenplays very few are sequels or prequels.

Why did everyone love Inception? Because it was something new which hadn’t really been seen before, going into dreams within, dreams. If you actually understood the movie then you probably enjoyed it and how it had such a cool concept. Franchises usually just rehash the same concept you’ve already seen repeatedly, such as the force from Star Wars.

If a remake of a beloved movie flops critically and financially then it immediately tarnishes the legacy of the original film as a result. A good result of this would be The Mummy, Point Break, or Ghostbusters which were recent flops that damaged the name of their respective franchises.

Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Indiana Jones all have one thing in common. They all are epic sagas where their story is told through multiple installments. Few people would rather not have to sit and watch every single movie to get the full story. The thing about original standalone films is that when they end that’s it, and a lot of viewers prefer that.
