Education

People often get confused between psychologists and psychiatrists and other doctors when looking for mental health treatment. Let’s briefly discuss the differences between psychologists and doctors.

Doctors have a degree in medicine (MD) and are trained in treating disorders inside the body. Psychologists, on the other hand, have a degree in Psychology (PsyD) and are experts in the mind and human behaviour. Because of medical training, doctors can prescribe medications, and psychologists can treat mental-health-related disorders like depression, addiction, suicidal thoughts, etc.

Both psychologists and doctors, such as psychiatrists, are trained in psychotherapy, which involves talking to the patients about the problems. However, the way they approach to solving the issues is different. Psychologists carefully study your behaviour and treat mental health disorders. For example, if you are depressed and can’t eat food, it is due to behavioural activation, and a psychologist can help you overcome the problem.

On the other hand, if depression is due to an underlying disease such as vitamin deficiency, a doctor will perform diagnosis and then prescribe medicines.

If you are suffering from severe depression, or mental disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder, seeing a psychiatrist or neurologist would be the best. Doctors have formal training to treat such diseases and would be able to help you with the treatment, care, and recovery.
