Not Your Ordinary Titans

The shows main character, Dick Grayson. Also known as Nightwing

The popular shows Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go! were hits in the late 2000s and 2010s. Along with multiple movies surrounding the shows. The DC licensed characters appeared other places but were mainly stuck to the Teen Titans franchises. The shows were simple, funny shows made for children, but in October 2018 that was no longer the case. On October 12th, 2018, DC Universe changed the shell in which Titans was produced. No longer was this show intended for children. In fact intended for ages 16+, per Common Sense Media. The show is based around brown up Dick Grayson, Robin, who builds a team to fight crime. However now, the show is a gruesome live action show in which the Titans are no longer teen. Grayson, a Detroit cop, is also the hero Robin who fights crime around the law to protect the city. The characters Robin (Dick), Raven, Beast Boy, Starfire and various others are featured, trying to fight enemies and much more gruesome then the Titans formerly were. The show takes the characters, who are no longer put together when the show starts, and has them work together with their various differences and disagreements. Most of the characters meet and work together and didn’t know each other prior. One character joins at a time to help put this team together, adding more characters as late as 2nd most recent episode. Titans helps to show leadership, teamwork and growth as the show passes on even with its ups and downs.

To start, Titans provides a great amount of teamwork as it takes multiple characters who are nothing alike, some even former enemies and pushes them to work together. In episode 7 this is evident, all characters group up to take on separate tasks. The groups divide to find clues to help them search for the main two villains, Red Hood and Scarecrow. The main two groups that are followed are Robin (Now named Nightwing) and Commissioner Gordon as well as Starfire and former enemy of the Titans turned hero, Blackfire. These missions send Gordon and Nightwing into a machine to not be used as it is too powerful and against the law, all to be hacked and misleading thanks to scarecrow. The machine was capable of knowing every single humans spoken words, location and more, good reason for it to be illegal. In the other group, Starfire and Blackfire hunt down mob boss Valeska Knox for info on Scarecrow and what he may be plotting. She eventually leads them to the factory where all the drugs are being produced and the whole group puts and end to this. Now Red Hood and Scarecrow are on the run. The episode ends with a party back at Wayne Manor as the group celebrates putting an end to the chaos, for now. This episode goes over the teamwork and dedication the group has to work together and get things done. Starting with the fire sisters who once hated each other, now working together to support the cause. As for Gordon and Nightwing, they renewed their friendship as they were almost working against one another prior. Overall, teamwork is a key factor in this episode to help solve their issues and stop the dangers that arise.

Next off, growth is very evident throughout the series but makes big leaps in episode 7. Primarily, at the beginning of the series, Dick Grayson is a brutal, aggressive cop who goes past the law to solve his crimes as he privately fights as Robin. He soon leaves Detroit to help a girl named Raven who’s demonic abilities can overtake her, becoming basically a father. Eventually, over time his entire hero squad lives together as one with Dick overlooking everyone. He takes many more people in to help protect the city and have a roof over their heads. A lot of the heroes are unwanted humans or creatures that are all appreciated as a part of Titans. One specific hero he helps is Robin, to be more precise, Jason Todd. He was Dicks replacement after Dick left for Detroit. Jason is a homeless teen with lots of aggression. Jason hates cops but loves fighting crime more. He’s an odd hero, he wants to be alone basically. He always wants to do it his way, and soon that becomes his downfall. He becomes Red Hood, a true anti-hero. He hates Dick for overshadowing him, always being better than him. He goes bad and wants Gotham to see him, no longer be behind the shadows. These character developments become key plot-lines. Other small episode 7 developments include, Starfire and Blackfire joining together and fighting beside one another and Beast Boy going to help Jason via help from Jason’s girlfriend. Overall, growth is a key point in this show and is super important to develop characters and help them finally work together.

The show is overall great, perfectly relates to the viewer in many ways. In all, the heroes are good together, they balance each other’s flaws and work together well. They each are able to help other characters in various ways. They aren’t perfect though as many characters in the Titans have passed from too much separation in the group and one character becoming too full of themselves and overpowering. This relates back to the viewer, reminding them that they are not perfect. But each special in their own kind of way.
