As a certified personal trainer, fitness nutrition specialist, bodybuilder, crossfitter, and overall fitness enthusiast, I have a serious love/hate relationship with the online fitness industry that exists and continues to grow.

On the one hand, there are more and more places to find motivation and information each and every day. The internet is a great tool to learn new things and stay on top of the latest research to find what works.

But on the other hand, millions of people are being preyed upon, manipulated, and taken advantage of by “fitness influencers”.

I myself hope to influence people to live an exciting, freeing, healthy life of fitness, but I can’t relate to those that call themselves fitness influencers and my reason is my integrity.

So in an honest effort to educate people with REAL information that will actually HELP them reach their goals and develop good habits, here are the 5 biggest lies being told to you by your favorite fitspos:

It’s something we’ve all heard. “If you want to lose weight, you must exercise.” While I’m a huge proponent of exercise for general health reasons, and it certainly can have an impact on achieving a certain look, exercise is NOT the key to weight loss. The absolute key is nutrition. Look at it this way, an hour on the treadmill will maybe burn about 250–300 calories depending on your size (less if you are a smaller female). That’s fewer calories than a donut. Let’s just say, it’s a lot easier to not eat the donut.

2. You can target fat loss by lifting weights for that body part

I’m sure you’ve seen people post their favorite exercises for 6-pack abs or the best tricep exercises to get rid of under-arm fat…well, that’s not exactly how it works. You can’t localize fat loss, no matter how hard you try. When we burn fat, we burn it from all over our bodies and genetics will play a huge role in where you carry your fat. Most women carry their fat in their hips and thighs, and no amount of thigh exercises will change that.

3. The supplements they rep are the reason they look how they do.

The US weight loss market was worth over $68 billion in 2017 and expected to grow. What’s even more shocking is that these products are NOT regulated by the FDA. This means they don’t go through any sort of testing to see if they do what they say or even contain what they claim. There is absolutely no evidence to support the claims of over 60% of these products.

4. They don’t pay ANY attention to their food intake.

Of course, some people are naturally leaner than others and might get away with intuitive eating, but people that are looking to make a significant physical change will need to take a look at what is going in their mouths. The more dialed in you’d like your physique, the more detailed your nutrition will need to be. While it is possible to maintain a chiseled physique without tracking anything, it takes years and years to get to this place and should not be advertised to newbies as an optimal way to start their journey.

5. They’re all natural

Whether we’re talking about artificial sweeteners, plastic surgery, or some pretty heavy gear, these little helpers are not exposed to an unassuming social media audience. Nothing against any of these things; I adore fake sugar, but we need to remember at the end of the day, we can’t compare ourselves to other people because we don’t KNOW everything they do when the cameras are off.
